Vote in April's Council Election

ballot-boxOnce every year, GreenStar's member-owners have the opportunity to select people who will represent them by serving on the Co-op's governing body — which we call the Council. The annual Council election — which fills at least one-third of the seats on the board — occurs throughout the month of April, and member-owners can vote at either store, by mail, or in person at the Co-op's Annual Meeting on April 25.

This year, there will be six candidates on the ballot — including three incumbents running for re-election (designated with asterisks below) and three member-owners who haven't previously served on the Council (or one of its committees):

The five candidates who receive the most votes will each win full, three-year terms on Council. The sixth-place finisher will receive a one-year term (filling out the remainder of the term of former Council Member Angela Zhang, who resigned in February). It's possible to add write-in candidates to your ballot, but the only write-ins qualified to be elected are those who publicly declare their candidacies by March 31 (before voting starts). As of late-March, one write-in candidate had declared — Robert Rhea, former Council Member and Treasurer.

Statements by and photos of all candidates on the ballot (including attendance records for incumbents) are part of the Member Mailing that is being sent by mail or electronically to all member-owners in early April. If you haven't received the Mailing by mid-April, look for a copy in the stores, and also please contact the Membership Department to be sure we have your current contact information. This information (plus the names and statements of any qualified write-in candidates) is also posted at both stores, and on GreenStar's website (www.greenstar.coop). Ballots are included in the Mailing and are available at both stores — please follow voting instructions carefully. At the Annual Meeting (Friday, April 25 at the newly remodeled Space @ GreenStar, food and mingling at 5:30 pm, business starting at 6:30), all candidates are invited to make brief statements and to answer questions from other member-owners.

According to the Co-op's bylaws, at least 200 member-owners must vote in a Council election in order for the results to be valid, and a candidate must receive at least 50 votes in order to be elected. If those thresholds aren't met, any seats left vacant will be filled by Council appointment. So, even though this year's pool of candidates is not as large as we might have hoped (despite a strong effort at candidate recruitment), your vote will still make a difference. Democracy depends upon participation. Please inform yourself and VOTE IN APRIL!
