When you join the Co-op you become a Member-Owner of a locally-owned and cooperatively operated values-based business. We focus on the social and environmental impact GreenStar makes on our local and global community, as well as economic performance. We put our values first, and return all profits back to the Co-op or donate them to the community.
One Member – One Vote means your voice truly counts!
Like all consumer co-ops, GreenStar is owned and democratically run by the people who use the store. Unlike traditional corporations where the amount of a stockholder's investment determines his or her voting power, every member at GreenStar has equal voting rights. As a Member-Owner, you have an equal say in the future direction of GreenStar.
By investing and participating in your co-op, you're putting your values into action.
Through your Equity Share investment and patronage, GreenStar supports the health and well-being of our member-owners, our community and the planet by:
- Purchasing from local farmers and businesses
- Paying a livable wage
- Using clean energy and recycled office supplies
- Supporting organic agriculture and fair trade producers
- Offering health insurance to employees
- Donating to local charities and events
- Providing education on nutrition, health and sustainability
- Improving access to healthy food to those on limited budgets through the FLOWER program

If you've been thinking about volunteering in the store on a weekly basis at GreenStar, you couldn't pick a better time! With a growing interest in cooperatives and our business going strong, our department managers have responded by creating more shifts, enabling more member-owners to participate in the everyday workings of the Co-op. Therefore, we currently have a wide variety of in-store super-worker opportunities.
Volunteering is an important co-op tradition that provides member-owners the opportunity to become actively involved in supporting the mission of the co-op. It's a great way for us, as member-owners, to connect with one another while supporting the business that we mutually help govern and own. Volunteering also yields a great member-owner benefit, since volunteers receive a higher discount at the register in return for their participation in the store.
What's the commitment?
We ask for a four-month commitment for super-worker shifts. Super-workers are assigned to a two-hour weekly shift in a specific department. The day and time is the same each week. Super-workers receive a 17½ percent discount, good for one week, for every two-hour shift worked.
How to volunteer?
All available super-worker shifts are posted at the Member Center in both the West-End and Oasis locations. To request a super-worker shift, simply choose one or two shifts on the board that work for you and fill out a "Member Labor Request Form." You'll receive a call from either Oasis or the West-End store, depending on which shift you sign up for. We fill super-worker shifts on a first-come first-served basis, so it's a good idea to request two shifts since there may be other people in line before you for a given shift.

As I sit down to write this month's Membership Corner, Thanksgiving is quickly approaching and thoughts of all I'm grateful for come to mind. Needless to say, being part of the GreenStar cooperative community is one of the things I'm most grateful for.
Over the past few years, it's been exciting to watch our co-op evolve in so many significant ways. Member benefits such as FLOWER, BASICS, and 10% on the 10th sales days improved access to the healthy foods and products we sell for many people. An increase in opportunities offered through our member labor program enabled a growing number of member-owners to participate in the Co-op in fun and meaningful ways. Enhancing our community outreach, and expanding our partnerships, helped us to increase our participation in efforts to strengthen the local food distribution system and actively address important issues, such as food justice and racism. Our One-Minute Activist efforts in the past few years on hydrofracking and GM labeling yielded over 1,100 signatures each, sending a strong message to Governor Cuomo and other policymakers on what matters to GreenStar member-owners. Even our annual Kids' Halloween party has blossomed into a thriving see-and-be-seen event(though you may not be recognized!).
As I look forward to 2014, I see more exciting opportunities ahead for GreenStar and its member-owners. The expansion of our Deli and Bakery into a bona fide commercial kitchen operation will allow us to improve and expand our selection of prepared natural, healthy foods, thereby enabling us to better meet our member-owners' needs. It will also help us to grow our catering business and take the healthy food we sell into the community even more. This will enable us to reach people who may never have ventured into the co-op before and expose them to a more sustainable way of eating as they experience firsthand how great natural, organic food tastes and makes you feel.
And it is truly exciting to see that we now are in the position to change our 10% on the 10th sales days benefit to U-Pick 10% Off, whereby member-owners can choose any day of the month for their 10% discount day.

I am thrilled to announce that, for the first time since our FLOWER low-income discount program began four years ago, we've added a new qualifying program, Healthy Food For All (HFFA). What makes this addition particularly exciting is that it's the first local community program to be a qualifier for FLOWER. Until now, we've used only national programs for FLOWER qualification (Food Stamps, Public Assistance, Medicaid, WIC, and Free School Lunch). HFFA will allow us to broaden the program by reaching individuals and families who are income-eligible for those national programs, but don't qualify for other reasons or choose not to participate in them.
Healthy Food For All is a truly beautiful example of food justice in action. The program is a collaborative effort between local farmers who offer Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares and the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County. The program provides households of limited income with access to locally grown produce at a price they can afford via subsidized CSA shares. To ensure that the farmers receive a fair price for these shares, HFFA actively raises funds through grants and benefit galas, such as Harvest Dinners on the Farm. Consequently, HFFA not only benefits the households that receive the produce, but also the farmers who are committed to sustainable, organic farming practices.
Given the similarities in the food access goals of HFFA and our own FLOWER program, using HFFA as a qualifier for FLOWER was simply a natural. Some HFFA participants were already paying for their CSA shares at GreenStar, an arrangement entered into when HFFA was looking for a way to enable participants to pay for the CSA's with food stamps; this was a service we could easily provide. Now, those participants and others in the program will have improved access to an even greater variety of food products through the opportunity to become FLOWER participants. Our FLOWER program is certainly blossoming!
